Not sure why everyone’s speculating about who Kamala Harris’ vice-presidential pick should be, given that Sunday’s House of the Dragon served up the perfect running mate: Oscar Tully.
Grover Tully’s young grandson has been in charge of the Riverlands for all of five minutes, thanks to Oscar Tully’s demise, and he’s already proven himself to be a down-to-earth leader. His arrival at Harrenhal in Episode 7 showed that he is unafraid to admit his weaknesses (chief among them a lack of experience, owing to the fact that he’s basically a zygote) and ready to make tough decisions (such as joining #TeamBlack, despite the optics).
But the best part about this kid? He’s got Daemon’s number. And for all of the Targaryen prince’s (get outta here with that “king” business) posturing, Rhaenyra’s silver-haired husband is brought up short by a newly named liege lord who probably hasn’t had his first shave yet. In a deft move, he makes Daemon answer for his commissioning of war crimes, having him dole out the grim punishment coming to Lord Blackwood. The best leaders, after all, know how to delegate.
* Why, in the name of the Seven, did Rhaenyra start the Red Sowing off with Vermithor? Was there no gentler dragon — Silverwing comes to mind, given how comparatively gentle she was with Ulf — to try out with the dragonseeds?
* Think we’ll meet Alicent’s other son, Prince Daeron, who’s been mentioned twice in the past two episodes, in next week’s season finale?
* Speaking of Alicent: After the way this season (slash her whole life) has gone, can you blame the queen for opting out of royal life and going on a little solo(ish) camping trip?
* Anyone else very worried about the prospect of Helaena — who was emotionally fragile even before the heinous murder of her toddler son, Jaehaerys — being forced to mount Dreamfyre and ride into battle, as the finale promo teases? ( Watch it here .)
