Yankees could deal Nestor Cortes before MLB trade deadline

PHILADELPHIA — While the Yankees are clear-cut buyers at the trade deadline , it’s not out of the question they could sell at least one major-league piece to land more talent.

Nestor Cortes’ name has come up in trade discussions, The Post’s Jon Heyman reported Monday, as the Yankees have plenty of balls in the air ahead of Tuesday’s 6 p.m. deadline.

The Yankees were believed to be interested in Cardinals utilityman Tommy Edman, who has been on the injured list all season following offseason wrist surgery and then spraining his ankle during his rehab.

But the Cardinals are reportedly dealing Edman to the Dodgers in a trade that will send Erick Fedde to the Cardinals.

Of course, if the Yankees were to trade Cortes, they would need to make another move to fill the hole in their rotation, with Clarke Schmidt not expected back from the IL until late August.

They are among the teams that have checked in on Giants left-hander Blake Snell , Heyman reported Sunday, though it remains to be seen whether the Giants (53-55) will actually sell.

Through 22 starts this season, Cortes has a 4.13 ERA across 124 ⅓ innings. He has struggled in his last three starts, giving up 15 runs in 13 ⅓ innings against the Rays (twice) and Red Sox.
