Some recent class-action settlements could include cash payouts that help qualifying consumers earn extra income this August.

But in almost all cases, a check won’t just magically make its way to your mailbox. Instead, you have to file a valid claim before the lawsuit’s deadline if you want to receive your part of the settlement.

Keep reading to find out about class-action lawsuits with settlement deadlines coming up this month. If you have a valid claim, make sure to submit it (with the required legal documentation) before the listed deadline.

    1. Roadmaster Drivers School

    Filing deadline: August 3

Roadmaster Drivers School trains individuals who are trying to get their commercial driver's licenses (CDLs).

According to this lawsuit, some of the school’s students paid tuition, took tests, and received licenses that were later declared invalid by the State of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

If you were a student at the school who paid tuition and had your license revoked, you could qualify for up to $800 as part of the cash settlement.

    2. 1-800-PACK-RAT

    Filing deadline: August 7

California is a two-party recording consent state, meaning that both the person doing the recording and the person being recorded have to be aware of and agree to the recording.

However, this lawsuit alleges that between September 27, 2021, and October 10, 2022, the customer service department at 1-800-PACK-RAT recorded consumers’ calls without obtaining prior consent.

If you qualify for this settlement, you could receive up to $100 per call or $600 in total.

    3. Costco flushable wipes

    Filing deadline: August 9

According to this lawsuit, Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand flushable wipes weren’t actually flushable as advertised. Instead, the wipes allegedly damaged plumbing systems, pipes, and septic systems.

To settle the case, Costco agreed to pay $2 million in collective damages to consumers in New York who purchased Costco-brand moist wipes between July 2011 and May 2017.

    4. Philips CPAP recall

    Filing deadline: August 9

Philips Respironics sells medical devices like CPAP machines, which are used to treat conditions like sleep apnea. However, the company allegedly distributed machines with flawed foam, leading to a recall.

If your machine was among those recalled by Philips, you could receive up to $100 for each recalled device.

    5. Big Picture Loans/Castle Payday

    Exclusion deadline: August 19

Did you take out a Big Picture or Castle Payday loan at any point between June 22, 2013, and May 1, 2024? Per this class-action lawsuit, you might have been charged an interest rate that exceeded legal requirements.

While the final settlement amount is $65 million, it’s not clear how much money each claimant could receive in the suit. No claim form is required, but you must file an exclusion by August 19 if you would like to be left off the suit.

    6. Porsche communication management system

    Filing deadline: August 20

Prior to May 20, 2020, some Porsche models were equipped with a communication management system that allegedly crashed and rebooted with no warning. Individuals who owned or leased Porsche vehicles with the defect had to pay out of pocket to fix the problem.

If you spent your own money repairing your car’s system, you could be entitled to up to $7,500 in reimbursed expenses.

    7. East Palestine train derailment

    Filing deadline: August 22

At the beginning of February 2023, a train operated by Norfolk Southern came off the rails near East Palestine, Ohio. According to the lawsuit, the derailment caused a spill of hazardous chemicals that negatively impacted both businesses and residents within 20 miles of the accident.

The company agreed to settle for a total of $600 million, which will be apportioned based on each claimant’s location relative to the accident.

For instance, residents within two miles of the spill will likely receive $70,000 per household. In contrast, residents between 15 and 20 miles away from the accident site may qualify for $250 per household.

    8. Atlantic General data breach

    Filing deadline: August 22

If Atlantic General notified you that your information was compromised in the security incident, you could qualify for up to three years of free credit monitoring as part of the settlement.

You may also be reimbursed for up to $5,000 of personal expenses related to the data breach.

    9. Bleacher Report

    Filing deadline: August 23

Bleacher Report is a sports-centric website that caters directly to sports fans. Per this lawsuit, the website allegedly gathered users’ information and shared it with Facebook, which is a violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act.

If you had a Bleacher Report account between January 25, 2021, and May 21, 2024, you could have a valid claim in this lawsuit. While Bleacher Report settled for $4.8 million, the amount each claimant could receive hasn’t yet been determined.

    Bottom line

If you’re a smart saver, you’re always looking for little ways to get ahead financially — and staying on top of recent class-action settlements is one way to give your budget a helping hand.

Depending on the case, the settlement’s cash payout might not be much, but adding even a few extra dollars and cents to your retirement savings account will make a big difference down the road.
