    If you've ever adopted a new puppy, you know the absolute struggle of trying to get them on a schedule. Puppies need to eat and drink a lot and they also need a lot of exercise to help them get their ya-yas out. Not to mention to take care of other outdoor business.

    One person who knows this struggle all to well is Kerry Washington, the gorgeous 47-year-old actress who is in London filming Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery . With her new puppy.

    People Magazine has an exclusive with the Scandal star who said, "Time in Europe has left Washington dealing with the occasional bout of jet lag, but she says her puppy Cinnamon needs the most help with time changes .

    "Six-month-old Shih Tzu-Yorkie Cinnamon has had a tough time," Washington says of the pair's European schedule.

    "I was up walking her at 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. She's brand-new, so we're freaking out!" she adds of Cinnamon, who is staying in Europe with Washington this summer.

    Waking up to walk the dog at both 2 am and 4 am seems about right for typical puppy behavior. Sure, you can also crate train , but your puppy will still need to eliminate outside the crate, which is where these late night jaunts come in.

    Taking your dog for a late night stroll has a lot of benefits, including relaxing you before you turn in for the night and lessening the chances of your dog waking you up at 3 am for a middle-of-the-night potty break.

    Here are a few tips to make sure and your doggo stay safe for your evening strolls.

    Make sure your dog is wearing a collar with ID tags and they have an updated microchip . If your dog should run off or get lost this can help you get them home safely. It's also a good idea to get your dog a reflective collar, leash, or harness. Wear reflective clothing or accessories yourself. That way cars can see you in the dark, especially in areas that don't have streetlights. You should also stick to well-lit, familiar routes in your own neighborhood to avoid potential hazards and ensure a safe path.

    If your neighborhood has had coyote sightings it's a good idea to carry a whistle or horn to scare off any animals you encounter.

    Make sure your cell phone is charged, but don't use your phone or wear headphones that could distract you from your environment. Save your podcast binges for the daytime. You should also let a friend or family member know your walking route and expected return time.

    By following a few safety tips, you can make nighttime walks safer and more fun for both you and your fur baby!
