Who's the top competition for U.S. in women's Olympic gymnastics team final?

    Simone Biles.

The Olympic women's gymnastics meet continues Tuesday in Paris with one of the headlining events of the Games: the team all-around final. Eight countries — Brazil, Canada, China, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Romania and the United States — will compete for spots on the podium.

Each of the eight is capable of completing impressive routines, but these are the countries that should challenge for a medal:

    United States

The United States, which had three of its five gymnasts take the top spots in the individual all-around competition, is the gold-medal favorite. Each nation is only allowed to send two athletes to the final, though, so poor Jordan Chiles will miss out despite being the third-best all-around gymnast in Paris.

But the U.S. also has issues to deal with.

Simone Biles aggravated a calf injury during qualifying and will be performing below 100 percent. Jade Carey is still recovering from a suspected stomach bug that affected her qualifying performance and kept her from defending her Tokyo gold medal in the individual floor final. Both must push through discomfort to deliver the gold back to the United States.

    Italy

Italy won the European championship in grand style this year, but its strong performance in qualifying was something of a surprise. It outperformed perennial favorites China and Japan and wound up making the Olympic final in second place.

Italy's strength lies in its consistency: Two of its five gymnasts, Alice D'Amato and Manila Esposito, qualified for the individual all-around final. It was the only team (other than the United States) to place two gymnasts in the all-around top 10. Expect Italy to deliver big points on the balance beam and floor.

    China

China had a slightly underwhelming qualifying day, but it should turn it on for the team final. Its advantage is its dominance on uneven bars — no other nation at the team final can match its mastery of that event.

China also has one of the world's best beam performers in Zhou Yaqin, who qualified for the final in first place in that event, handily beating Team USA's Suni Lee and Biles.

China may struggle on the vault, where its routines are competent but not earth-shattering. Vault is the highest-scoring event in women's gymnastics, so China's overall team score will suffer for not optimizing the vault's point potential.

    Brazil

Brazil's gymnastics program has risen slowly and steadily and may peak in Paris. Team leader Rebeca Andrade is the only gymnast in the world who can realistically challenge Biles in the all-around competition. She did exactly that in qualifying, finishing a close second to Biles.

Andrade is the clear star of this Brazil team, but her fellow all-around competitor Flavia Saraiva is capable of delivering big points, too. If Andrade and Saraiva are consistent in the team final, Brazil will have a strong chance of winning a medal. If they struggle, however, Brazil doesn't have the depth to support them.

The women's team all-around final is Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. ET.
