The Los Angeles Rams found a hidden gem during the 2023 NFL Draft when they selected wide receiver Puka Nacua. A fifth-round pick out of BYU, he took the NFL and Fantasy Football world by storm.
Replacing injured star Cooper Kupp early in the season, Puka Nacua hit the ground running as a rookie. He was setting records on a weekly basis, providing the Rams and managers fortunate enough to have landed him with immense value.
He ended up starting all 17 games for Los Angeles, recording 105 receptions for 1,486 yards and six touchdowns. The Rams have yet another building block for their roster that unearthed plenty of foundational pieces in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Heading into the 2024 season, the expectation is that Puka Nacua will continue playing at a high level. He is one of the highest-ranked players in Fantasy Football, with an ADP of No. 10 overall and being the seventh wide receiver off the board.
However, Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report cautions any Fantasy Football manager looking to pick Nacua for their team. He recently shared his list of busts to avoid in your draft and the Rams star came in at No. 6.
“It’s well within the realm of reason that Kupp could regain his status as the Rams No. 1 wideout and outscore Nacua in 2024. If that happens, Nacua could go from league-winner to season-killer in the span of one year,” Davenport wrote.
Kupp’s health is what opened the door for Nacua to put together a massive 2023 season. In 2024, it is Kupp’s health again that will impact him, but this time, it will be negative.
Led by Matthew Stafford, the Rams’ offense is certainly strong enough for two wide receivers to have plenty of value in Fantasy Football. The issue with selecting Puka Nacua is that the value may not be there as a first-round pick.
Has he officially supplanted Kupp as the No. 1 target in the passing game? That will be worth keeping an eye on throughout Rams training camp.
Fantasy Football championships aren’t won in the first round. But, they can certainly be lost, as Puka Nacua looks the part of a high-risk, low-reward option based on his current ADP.
