Former NFL Star Offers Strong Defense Of 49ers’ Brock Purdy

Brock Purdy has made the NFC Championship and Super Bowl in his first two seasons. However, some analysts, fans, and pundits are not sold on the San Francisco 49ers quarterback.

This has led to a reaction of a couple of analysts on “The Carton Show.” Speaking on a recent episode of the broadcasts, NFL analysts Craig Carton and Victor Cruz—a former star wide receiver—went to bat for the quarterback.

“Having great talent on you shouldn’t be a knock on you,” Carton said.

“It’s a travesty [he’s not seen as a top 10 quarterback],” added Cruz.

Of course, the biggest knock leveled against Purdy by some analysts is how much talent the quarterback has on the 49ers’ roster. He has George Kittle, who was the league’s only 1000-yard tight end last year. He also has Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Plus, Christian McCaffrey is in the backfield.

Aiyuk’s future with the team is unclear, but at least at the moment and over the past couple of seasons, Purdy has been surrounded by superb talent.

Another big catalyst some have pointed to is Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers head coach has worked in three Super Bowls and most think of him as an offensive genius. So, if one adds it all up, Purdy lost a Super Bowl with Shanahan, Kittle, Aiyuk, and Samuel and McCaffrey at his disposal.

Both Purdy and his predecessor Jimmy Garoppolo have pulled off the same feat. Both have lost Super Bowls to Patrick Mahomes despite holding second-half leads. As such, some believe it wasn’t a coincidence that put Purdy in the same bucket as Garoppolo. Many agree that Garoppolo was carried to his Super Bowl appearance by Shanahan’s unit. With Purdy unable to elevate the team beyond Garoppolo’s level, they believe they can knock him aside as “another Garoppolo.”

49ers QB Brock Purdy faces opportunity to prove doubters wrong once again

So far, that isn’t true. With Purdy continuing to improve statistically and in how far he can get in the playoffs, one can only wait before writing him off with factual confidence. If he stumbles this season, one can argue against him with much more efficacy. However, until it is demonstrated, anyone claiming to nail down his abilities is simply guessing.

Purdy threw for 13 touchdowns and four interceptions in his rookie season. The last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft (affectionately known as “Mr. Irrelevant”), Purdy managed to get the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. At the game, he suffered an injury and failed to finish the contest. Many called it a fluke.

However, Purdy managed to duplicate his success and move one step further, throwing for 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2023. He also took his team to the Super Bowl.

Now, with the bar impossibly high, any improvement should instantly erase most doubt about his ability to be a leader in the NFC for the next decade, despite his draft stock in 2022.

Will Brock Purdy deliver for the 49ers in 2024?
