Simone Biles didn't let an ailing calf hold her back from turning in the top performance in qualifying at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.

The gold medalist has learned that's what comes with competing at the highest level of gymnastics.

After Biles fought through a leg injury on her first day competing at the Summer Games, reporter Will Graves recalled a telling reply from Biles when asked about dealing with adversity. The Associated Press reporter recounted a time a few years ago when Biles fell awkwardly during a practice and was asked about it afterward.

Biles strained to even remember the setback, then laughed before delivering her answer.

    “That’s gymnastics," she said.

The 27-year-old was visibly hurting during qualifying at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, having her leg wrapped for a portion of the qualifying day. Biles still managed to lead the competition, earning a spot alongside teammate Suni Lee in the all-around final.

Biles is no stranger to adversity. She ended up pulling out of several events in the Tokyo Olympics after suffering from "twisties," which caused her to lose control and orientation while flying through the air.
