Believe it or not, a dull knife is actually more dangerous than a sharp one. They’re more likely to slip when you’re slicing and dicing, quite literally putting your fingers in harm’s way. The good news is, if you’ve got any knives (or scissors) that are just too blunt for chopping, you don’t have to replace them with new ones. Instead, you can just sharpen them.

We found a pocket knife sharpener on sale that one reviewer says changed their blades from “ butter knife dull ” to “razor sharp” after one use, and the already-affordable gadget is marked down an extra 15% to just $12.74 . Several say it’s incredibly easy to use, too, even for newcomers doing their first sharpening. Knives aside, it’s also handy for letter openers, scissors and shears, and its pocket-size takes up minimal space.

This gadget has three slots for three types of sharpening: one for scissors, one for dull or damaged knife edges and one for removing burrs from already sharp knives that double as a serrated sharpener. It has a suction cup at the bottom to keep it steady while in use, which one user classifies as “strong as hell” — a hallmark of kitchen safety. One reviewer says it’s their most used gadget. “I have kept one on my desk for year(s) to keep my letter opener and scissors razor sharp,” they say. I am 89 and have had a couple of strokes, so I only have one working hand. It vacuums to my desk. After a couple of days of slicing open letters, [my opener gets] a little dulled. A couple of strokes on the ceramic V and it’s back to slicing.” Stop replacing dull knives and restore them instead. Jump on this money-saving knife sharpener deal while it lasts and tighten up your kitchen game.

“First let me say I’m a complete novice at sharpening and have never sharpened anything before in my life prior to buying this sharpener. I originally purchased this sharpener only to sharpen an old pair of kitchen shears I’m quite fond of that were so dull from repeated use they’d hardly cut anything anymore. I had my doubts it would work for me or be very easy to use due to my inexperience sharpening and lack of having a clue as to how to do it. I must say, I was quite surprised at how well it worked and how easy it was even for me to use. […] After only a minute or two of trying the sharpener I had the scissors cutting again like they hadn’t in years. Not to mention it was so easy to sharpen them even I was able to do it after quickly reading through the directions once too. I was so impressed I next decided to try it out on a cheap pair of dollar store scissors that would only cut paper and not particularly well at that. Again, to my surprise, in a minute or two of sharpening I had them cutting fabric when they were never able to before.” — Rhonda M (This review has been edited for length. “When this sharpener came I picked up the box and it was so light I thought I’d been sent an empty box. But no, it was in there. So small and light easy to store, and works great. The suction cup is simple and effective. I mostly use the ceramic blade and run the knife just a few times and it comes out nice and sharp.” — Timo H

I have kept one on my desk for year(s) to keep my letter opener and scissors razor sharp. I am 89 and have had a couple of strokes, so I only have one working hand. It vacuums to my desk. After a couple of days slicing open letters and is a little dulled a couple of strokes on the ceramic V and it’s back to slicing. I always take one with me when visiting friends as a gift. A couple of weeks ago my computer guy saw it on my desk. His wife had been bugging him to help her in the kitchen by keeping the knives sharp, so I gave him the extra one on my desk. Next time he came, he was so happy. His wife loved using it.” — Robert Carabin

Had this sharpener about a year. Still works great! Excellent for scissors as well as knives. The countertop suction works great and it’s easy to clean. I love that the unit collects the metal shards in the cup base. Just tap it in the garbage bin and it comes clean. No little metal filings all over the place. Don’t know how it would hold up for heavy duty use, but I Highly Recommend this sharpener for casual kitchen use!” — Corr101

WOW! Our knives were butter knife dull. I followed the instructions and sharpened all our carving knives and steak knives…Holy smokes! The knives are now razor sharp! Definitely recommend this sharpener. :-).” — Marty P

I have an old butcher knife that was so dull you could see the edge. After about a half hour with the old traditional whet stone, I gave up. I ordered the sharpener and within 48 hours it was attached to my counter ready to go. Within 4 minutes I could cut a newspaper with the blade. I was totally amazed. I wish I would have had one of these sharpeners years ago when I was a meatcutter. It’s amazing. For the price it can’t be beat.” — Paul
