Marmot Basin Updates Skiers Following Devastating Jasper, Canada Fires

Skiers have been worrying about the future of Marmot Basin since a large wildfire, sparked by a lightning storm, raged through part of Alberta, Canada last week.

Officials at Marmot Basin posted an update addressing these concerns on July 29th to the ski resort website, writing, "we now know that [the] infrastructure at Marmot Basin has not been affected by the Jasper Complex Wildfire. All facilities, buildings and ski lifts are completely intact."

While this news is a weight off the shoulders for everyone worried about the safety of Marmot Basin, the recent events continue to impact the greater community. Evacuations, loss of homes, and general devastation continue to affect the Jasper community.

Late last week, we reported that multiple wildfires combined in Alberta, Canada to create what's being referred to as the Jasper Fire Complex. Since Monday of last week, on July 22nd, the fire has affected over 89,000 acres of land.

According to the Government of Canada in an update posted earlier today, Jasper National Park is still closed, and the wildfire status remains classified as out of control.

There has been no significant fire growth reported today.

The Canadian Government also noted their thanks to see the "outpouring of support from surrounding communities, who have welcomed Jasper National Park residents, staff and visitors with open arms."

The stop of the fire's spread also allowed first responders to focus on protecting the town and critical infrastructure from more damage caused by the wildfire.

With this in mind, Marmot established that their number one priority is to support their staff through this time. Officials at Marmot wrote, "we are eternally grateful for the unending and selfless efforts of so many who have, and continue to tirelessly protect our people and community."

As of now, officials at Marmot Basin have announced that the ski area will be open this winter if their staff can swing it. Officials acknowledged the challenge, writing, "this will take much work on the part of many" but the team "can't wait to see our friends back on the slopes this winter."

Officials at Marmot promise to provide updates as more information comes out and they have a better sense of what this winter holds.
