RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala. (WRBL) — Russell County High School is making plans to open a new building for their athletic department next year.

The athletic director at Russell County High School tells News 3 plans are in place to build a multi-purpose building for athletes to use. The building will serve as an additional competing and training facility for the athletic department.

Faculty members say the school is running into challenges when scheduling practices as each sport is competing for one training facility.

Larry Knox, the Russell County High School Athletic Director says the new multipurpose building will eliminate those frustrations.

“We’re actually getting three gym floors. That now all our basketball programs will have an adequate place to practice and get good quality practices. The building will also become our gameday, practice volleyball facility. It will also become our gameday, practice wrestling facility. So now our wrestling program, which is in the same season as basketball, does not have to compete with dates in our current competition due.”

Knox also says the facility will allow for the wrestling, dance, and cheerleading programs to have their own rooms. The football team will have new locker and equipment rooms, in addition to a new training and weight-room room for all programs to use.

Knox says the building will bring a change to athletics for Russell County High School.

The building will be up for bids in August and should be ready for use in the Winter of 2025.
