HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – A Panhandle Sheriff and his family are being recognized for their service and devotion to law enforcement.

The Florida Sheriffs Association featured Holmes County Sheriff’s John Tate and his family in the quarterly issue of “The Sheriff’s Star.”

John’s father Sergeant David Tate began his career at the Holmes County Sheriff’s office in 1986, retiring last year after 37 years. They worked together from 1999 until 2023.

Sheriff Tate said he knew he would follow in his father’s footsteps since he was a child.

“A lot of times the children fall in their father’s footsteps. And that’s that’s the case here. You know, I mean, I see my dad do great things in law enforcement and with his father’s financial backing and stuff and handle on money and it kind of passing that. And I kind of feel in his footsteps the same way my son has done with me and it’s very humbling I guess the bottom line is just don’t ever forget where you come from,” Tate said.

Tate’s oldest son Aydan is continuing his family tradition. He became a deputy at the neighboring Washington County Sheriff’s Office in 2022.
