Federal health officials are warning consumers not to consume certain produce products distributed to Kroger stores because of possible health risk.

Guacamole, diced vegetables and salsas sold at Kroger stores in several states, including Michigan, are being recalled for possible contamination of Listeria Monocytogenes, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration recall announcement .

Michigan's Department of Agricultural and Rural Development (MDARD), the FDA says, discovered the potential contamination through routine sampling.

Supreme Service Solutions, also doing business as Supreme Produce, is working with Kroger and voluntarily recalling vegetable products purchased from Weirs Farms Inc.

Recalled products are fresh produce items packaged in clear-plastic grab-n-go containers in various sizes and being recalled because of possibly being contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes.

The products being recalled range from pico de gallo to chopped fresh cilantro with and without onions, to diced peppers and onions and cubes of butternut squash.

Consumers should not consume and discard the product if they have any, though the products are past their shelf life and should already be out of distribution. In all, 19 products are being recalled that were distributed in Kroger stores in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.Listeria can cause serious and fatal infections in children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, the FDA and CDC say. If you have symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

    Symptoms of listeria infection

The CDC says symptoms of listeria infection can be different depending on the person and part of the body affected.Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.Symptoms usually start two weeks after eating food contaminated with listeria. But they can also start as soon as the day of exposure and as late as 10 weeks after, the CDC says.

    Pregnant women

Typically, pregnant women experience fever, muscle aches and fatigue. However, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.Pregnant people usually have fever, muscle aches, and tiredness.

    Higher-risk other than pregnant women

Symptoms can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions in addition to fever and muscle aches. Those individuals who are 65 years and older or with have weakened immune systems are at higher risk because the listeria is more likely to spread beyond their gut to other parts of their body, resulting in a severe condition known as invasive listeriosis, the CDC says.
