Northern lights possible this week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The northern lights will be possible across several states through Wednesday following an increase in solar activity.

Coronal mass ejections have been detected on the surface of the sun in a region facing the Earth. These eruptions will send solar material across space toward our planet, increasing the chances of a geomagnetic storm over the next few days.

The Space Weather Prediction Center released a statement saying, “Geomagnetic storm watches are out for 29-31 July due to a number of possible CME arrivals.”

Aurora borealis forecasts for the globe are most favorable Monday night with a Kp Index forecast of 7. Unfortunately, Monday night is expected to be mostly cloudy over Michigan as a storm system slides through.

Skies will be clearer in Michigan Tuesday night with a Kp Index of 6 forecast, which is typically conducive to aurora sightings as far south as Saugatuck. Chances for the northern lights will continue Wednesday night, but clouds are expected to re-enter the forecast.
