Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira has been sent home by the Brazilian Olympic Committee for violating team rules.

Vieira and her Team Brazil boyfriend, Gabriel Santos, sneaked out of the Olympic Village without informing the team. Their infraction was discovered when they shared posts of their night out on social media.

Santos received a warning and was allowed to stay. Vieira was sent home because of her "disrespectful and aggressive manner" of contesting the decision.

"The athlete Ana Carolina, in a disrespectful and aggressive manner, contested a technical decision made by the Brazilian National Swimming Team committee," the BOC said in a statement.

"As a result, Gabriel Santos was given a warning and Ana Carolina Vieira was dismissed from the delegation. She will return to Brazil immediately."

Vieira, 22, competed in the 4x100 meter relay on Saturday, finishing 12th.

"We're not here playing or taking a vacation," Brazil's swimming team leader Gustavo Otsuka said in a statement. "We're here working for Brazil, for the 200 million taxpayers who are working for us.

"We can't play around here. She took a completely inappropriate position to make her point, her dismay, about the formation of the relay."

"It was during this period that we decided to take this situation to the disciplinary committee, discussed it and took the appropriate action," he continued. "We ended up finding out through the posts."
