There is much to learn from observing dogs. They instinctively show compassion and comfort without being asked to do so. Many can even meet a stranger and assess their needs within seconds.

This is precisely how these beautiful Labradors got their new jobs at Tewkesbury Abbey. Now, dog enthusiasts have even more reasons to visit this beautiful historic church.

Watch this video shared on July 6 to see how these terrific employees now greet the guests.

What an excellent job for these outgoing black Labs! The BBC Gloucestershire (@ bbcglos ) reports that Eric and Florence have been appointed assistant vergers at Tewkesbury Abbey. The plan for these dogs is to greet visitors and act as therapy dogs for anyone who needs them. Their dad, head verger Chris Skepper, witnessed them consoling a grieving woman who could not go inside for a service. Instead, she sat and stroked the dogs, and they provided her with the comfort she needed at that time. And that’s how they got themselves hired! They even wear their own ID batches to prove it. Undoubtedly, they will do much great work being employed at the church.

Reasons Labs Make Great Service Dogs

Many dog breeds are excellent therapy dogs, but Labradors are often chosen for this type of work because of their kind, calm, and loving nature. They are easily motivated by food, toys, and praise, which makes them easy to train. Their intelligence and moderate energy levels help them efficiently perform tasks for their humans. Labradors also have a good life expectancy and relatively fewer medical problems than other breeds.

People were thrilled to hear of these new hires! Viewer @taylormell responded, “A lot of abbeys, churches, and cathedrals don’t even let dogs in…. I have a little therapy dog, and we love to visit places but often get told we can’t come in. I’m not sure what happened to ‘All God’s creatures!’ Perhaps this new move will help to change that! It’s a lovely idea.” It truly is. Viewer @pam_stowe remarked, “Every church, synagogue, police station, store, etc. should have dogs. They calm us down and make life better.” It's hard to imagine people wouldn't be happier with more around. Viewer @tesscoady responded, “That is so beautiful, as many people that are not necessarily religious seek out a church environment to seek solace.” That’s very true, and finding these dogs who are there to provide comfort will surely be a gift for all.

Hopefully, one day, dogs will be allowed to go everywhere we do, especially since they offer the kindness and compassion humans so often need.
