From about the second trimester through the time your kid turns 5, sleep—and your lack of it—becomes a core conversation and one you’re forever desperate to finesse. Pregnancy is extra tricky because your rapidly expanding belly is the main reason you’re being robbed of quality Zs. Sure, there’s the fact that you’re now limited to sleeping on your side and the added obstacle that baby is now pushing on your bladder and forcing you to wake up countless times a night to pee. (Fun times!) But the right pair of maternity PJs can help offset all of that. Trust me, I’m 28 weeks and especially cognizant of the styles that are cute, comfy and don’t put pressure on my belly or make me overheat at night. That’s why, with help from a few equally discerning PureWow editors and moms-to-be, I pulled together a list of my favorite styles. Here, 7 of the best maternity PJs you can find, whether you’re in your first trimester or dressing for postpartum life.

    The Best Maternity PJs

How I Chose the Best Maternity PJs

First and foremost, I polled other pregnant and recently pregnant PureWow moms. But I also looked at my own maternity wardrobe, which includes styles that were well-worn while carrying my first-born (he’s now six) as well as new maternity PJ sets I’ve picked up for the second time around. My biggest discovery: A quality pair of maternity pajamas is an investment worth making. (That’s not to say that affordable styles don’t measure up!) But also, this is one clothing category where it really pays to pick up a designed-for-maternity style. (No eking out life in a pair of non-maternity PJs past the first trimester; your belly needs breathing space, here here.) Finally, I scoured the internet for any top-rated styles not on my radar. The result is a list of maternity PJs that all but guarantee a good night’s sleep.

    1. Monica & Andy Organic Pajama Top and Shorts

    Monica & Andy

True story: For my first pregnancy, I lived in this particular set with one minor difference (it came with pants). The shorts version of this lightweight, stretch jersey style is a dream for warmer months, but also for anyone struggling with a fluctuating body temperature. (Seriously—ask me how many times a night I flip my comforter on and off.) There are also so many details to love: the side slits that come with the top (nursing-friendly, but also perfect for accommodating a growing belly), the lounge-like feel of the fabric, even the range of colors, though they’re often sold out. I also love the banana boat-like neck, which adds to the airiness of the style; there’s also pockets on the shorts (a forever win for moms who always have something to carry).

    2. Lake Maternity Long-Long Set

    Lake

Any PJ style from Lake is going to be luxe, let me just say that. But the Pima cotton that this stylish maternity set (I especially love the Hydrangea) is made from is cooling, soft and high-end. (Hey, there’s a reason Pima is often referred to as the cashmere of cotton.) In fact, don’t be surprised if you find yourself wearing this set not just for bed, but around the house, too. It’s elegant and quite pretty, but also allows plenty of space for your growing bump. That said, I was surprised how many compliments I received from non-pregnant extended family on a recent group vacation—proof that a set like this is versatile enough to be worn from pregnancy and into postpartum…and beyond.

    3. Petite Plume Maternity Camisole and Shorts

    Petite Plume

This Petite Plume tank top and shorts maternity set arrived at just the right time. I was entering my second trimester and, when it came to sleep, nothing felt comfortable, nor did it fit. I put this on before bed and, voila! I felt pregnant, but also cute. What helped was the adjustable (and, down the road, nursing-friendly) straps in addition to the pastel color palette. The shorts have a structure that supplies shape and support while still feeling roomy. Let’s just say if I could wear this set out of the house, I would. One tiny quibble worth noting: I am someone who, pregnant or not, tends to twist and turn. After several nights of wear, I noticed a couple of spots wearing through in the material—nothing that truly bothered me, but worth a mention.

    4. Quince Bamboo Jersey Maternity & Nursing Short-Sleeve Set

    Quince

This particular style is another one I reach for again and again. It’s soft and comfortable, but also breathable and cooling. (Credit goes to the bamboo-derived fabric for that.) The button-down style makes it nursing-friendly, too, and the shorts come with an elastic waistband and adjustable drawstring—I repeat, comfort is top of mind. Still, it’s the price point that makes this style a standout. You’re paying for comfort and quality. (Quince is known for designing quality and sustainable pieces while cutting costs thanks to a factory-direct model.)

    5. Seraphine Maternity Nightie

    Seraphine

Yes, a nightgown totally counts when it comes to best-in-class maternity PJs. This design from Seraphine could not be more flattering and functional. I lived in it for my first pregnancy and reached for it again with my second. The cap sleeves, the round neckline, the nursing-ready snaps—it’s designed to be loose, which makes it not only comfortable, but versatile as you move from trimester to trimester, then into postpartum. I also love the navy hue, which covers all manner of stains (ahem, about that transition to middle-of-the night feedings…).

    6. Cozy Earth Short Sleeve Bamboo Pajama Set

I know I said you need to invest in real deal maternity wear when it comes to PJs, but PureWow’s executive editor—and mom-to-be for the third time—Alexia Dellner, swears by this short sleeve set from Cozy Earth and says they have easily accommodated her growing belly through all three trimesters. “These are the softest, most comfy pajamas I’ve ever owned,” she explains. “They’re light and cooling and still very durable. Other PJs have gotten torn up in the dryer or just worn out after use, but these have lasted months and months without looking slouchy or ragged.” She adds that the fit is a touch loose in early pregnancy, but they have accommodated her growing belly with zero issues throughout. (“I keep the shorts pulled up below my bump,” Dellner adds.) Still, the best part is how high-end they feel. “They look as luxurious as they feel—a sensation that’s hard to come by when you’re growing a tiny human and most of your wardrobe consists of sweatpants and oversized T-shirts.)

    7. Little Shadows Labor & Delivery Gown

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2QUhOb_0uhHykl500

    Little Shadows

This labor and delivery gown from Little Shadows is all about versatility—I wear it for sleep, but it’s also hospital bag-ready…and chic. (Think about it: When you check in for delivery, wouldn’t it be nice to feel a hair polished and put together in a gown that’s designed for all your birthing needs?) There’s more: The snaps run down the front and the back to accommodate your every comfort. Still, it’s the details that make this design sing: The beautiful lines, the elegant snaps, the cooling material. This is a great item to have on hand—but also one that any future mom would love as a gift.
