Tuesday's schedule at the 2024 Paris Olympics is jam-packed and includes two highly-anticipated swimming events and men's 3x3 basketball. The women's 100-meter backstroke begins at 2:57 p.m. ET and will feature two of the world's best swimmers in Regan Smith of the United States and Kaylee McKeown of Australia. Entering the Olympics, the pair own the event's 15 best times. Smith is favored at -125, with McKeown at +110. Others expected to challenge include Katharine Berkoff of the U.S. (+850), Iona Anderson of Australia (+3700) and Canada's Kylie Masse (+4200).
As for the men's 800-meter freestyle relay, it is Great Britain's chance to not only take gold, but shatter the 16-year-old world record, which was set by the United States at 6:58.55. Great Britain is the big favorite in the event at -285, while the U.S. is at +400. Australia, South Korea and China, all at +1300, are expected to battle for a bronze medal. The event will begin at 3:59 p.m. ET. Before locking in any 2024 Summer Olympics picks on those events or others, you need to see what SportsLine Olympic insider Mike Tierney has to say .
A national sportswriter whose work appears in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Tierney has covered nine Olympic Games in person. At Rio in 2016, Tierney profited big-time. He told readers to bet over on Team USA's gold medal count (41.5) and over on Team USA's overall medal count (102.5). The result? 46 golds, 121 medals and two easy cashes. Then, at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Tierney hit two of his three predictions: Germany (+200) to win the most gold medals and the United States winning under 10.5 gold medals (+110). Anybody following has seen some big returns.
Tierney is backing Australian Kaylee McKeown (+110) instead of the American Regan Smith, the favorite at -125, in the women's 100-meter backstroke. The expert does not see much difference between the two and sees more value in backing McKeown. He does expect this to be a two-person race to the finish.
"You can barely slide a slip of paper between McKeown and Regan Smith of the U.S., given their lack of separation," Tierney told SportsLine. "Entering the Games, they collectively owned the event's fastest 15 clockings. McKeown seized the gold in Tokyo and repeated in last year's Worlds before Smith unseated her rival in the world record category with the quickest 100 ever at the U.S. Trials. Typically, they were apart by .03 seconds Monday in the first qualifying round. With Smith assigned odds of -125, McKeown offers value." See the rest of his picks here .
