The 2024 Paris Olympics have only just begun, and already one commentator is out of a gig because of a controversial statement.

After the Australian team won the gold at the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, Eurosport broadcaster Bob Ballard was removed from the Olympics because of a comment he made during the event.

Ballard stated after the relay ended: “Well, the women are just finishing up. You know what women are like … hanging around, doing their makeup.”

Lizzie Simmonds, who was on the broadcast with Ballard, called the comment "outrageous." In turn, Eurosport decided to remove Ballard from the remainder of its Olympics coverage quickly.

Eurosport commented on the remarks by Ballard during its coverage (h/t Daily Mail):

"During a segment of Eurosport's coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment. To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect."

After the events unfolded, Ballard released a statement on X and issued an apology.

"The comments I made during the Australian freestyle relay victory ceremony on Saturday have caused some offence. It was never my intention to upset or belittle anyone and, if I did, I apologise. I am a massive advocate of women's sport."

The four Australians who won the gold at the event were Emma McKeon, Shayna Jack, Mollie O'Callaghan and Meg Harris.
