U.S. Water Polo team captain Maggie Steffen and her family are grieving the passing of her sister-in-law, Lulu Conner, who died on July 23 while in Paris for the Olympic games.

Steffen confirmed in a statement that her sister-in-law passed away at the age of 26, and the family is still trying to understand what happened after Lulu suffered from a “medical emergency” after arriving in Paris. “She was so excited for the Olympic Games. We’re really close. She’s the light of the world. She just brings so much joy to everyone. She always brings people together,” Steffan explained to the Associated Press. According to TOO FAB , Steffen married Lulu’s brother, Bobby Conner, in November, and she said she is channeling her energy into the games and leaning on her team for support.

“It definitely helps to play. I’m like so out of body in a way right now. And I just keep trying to remind myself what Lulu would want and how she would be, you know, how can I embody her spirit the best. And Lulu was somebody that she gave 150% to everything she did,” Steffen continued. This is the fourth Olympic game she is participating in. On July 27, she scored her 58th Olympic goal, making her the highest-scoring woman in Olympic history, and paid tribute to her sister-in-law by dropping a bouquet into the River Seine.

“My team has been a really big support system for me. I’ve been obviously really struggling, and my husband as well, and his entire family. It’s a nightmare, and it’s completely shocking. But I think just feeling her spirit here — its amazing. And I hope that we can make her proud every single day.”
