CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Charlotte-Douglas International Airport unveiled two new ‘skybridges’ Monday, making this the latest construction work to wrap for the Terminal Lobby Expansion project.
The two 146,000-square-foot glass bridges linking the Hourly Desk and Terminal, connect to the new mezzanine level in the lobby.
The bridges complement the existing underground walkways, offering pathways to bypass traffic and enhance passenger convenience as well as protection from weather.
Starting Wednesday, July 31, passengers traveling between the terminal and the Hourly Desk/Rental Car Facility must use the skybridges or underground walkways.
The Terminal Lobby Expansion project is in phase five of six and is scheduled for completion in 2025. The plan is to transform the terminal which was built in 1982 to accommodate the 2.8 million people who travel through the airport each year.
According to Charlotte-Douglas, in 2023, CLT passenger traffic reached a record 53.4 million. Of the 26.7 million passengers that departed CLT, 8.3 million (31%) used the terminal lobby.
