Jeopardy!’s James Holzhauer reunites with ‘legend’ Mattea Roach as fans ‘correct’ star in comments

JEOPARDY! star James Holzhauer has shared a snap alongside fellow champ Mattea Roach, delighting fans.

Game show viewers flooded the comments with kind words for the duo, gently correcting James, 40, as he dubbed only Mattea a “legend.”

James posted a photo on X, formerly Twitter , alongside Mattea, gushing over the meeting in his caption.

“OMG YOU GUYS I JUST MET A JEOPARDY LEGEND,” he wrote.

In the comments, fans issued their correction.

“Two Jeopardy legends in one pic!” praised one supporter.

“You are both Jeopardy Legends!” assured another.

“Icons being icons,” wrote a third commenter.

“I should be so fortunate; love watching you both!! Truly amazing!” a fourth commenter wrote.

“Two of my favorite champions,” gushed a fifth fan.

“TWO legends actually,” someone else posted.

JAMES’ GAME

James returned to the Jeopardy ! stage for Jeopardy Masters in May.

During the competition, fans noticed a connection between James and Victoria Groce outside of the show that they believe led to frustrations during gameplay.

The competition kicked off in April with James, Victoria , Amy Schneider , Matt Amodio, Mattea Roach, and Yogesh Raut competing.

In a matter of weeks, only four players were left before the semi-finals.

Jeopardy! Host Timeline

Jeopardy! has had a tumultuous history regarding hosts after the death of the iconic Alex Trebek in 2020. Here are all of the hosts since the game show's inception in 1964.

Art Fleming – 1964 to 1975, he was the original host of the daytime version of Jeopardy! on NBC.

Alex Trebek – 1984 to 2020, the late, great Alex hosted Jeopardy!’s modern iteration for 36 years until his death from pancreatic cancer.

Guest hosts – 2020 to 2021, Jeopardy! tested out a series of guest hosts for week or two-week stints, including Anderson Cooper, LaVar Burton, and Aaron Rodgers.

Mike Richards – 2021, he was named host for one week before resigning amid controversy. He was the show’s executive producer at the time.

Mayim Bialik – 2021 to 2023, when Mike was announced as the show’s new host, Mayim was chosen to host tournaments and primetime specials.

Mayim and Ken Jennings – 2022 to 2023, 74-time champion Ken (the longest-winning contestant ever) joined Mayim as a guest host and they split hosting duties.

Ken Jennings – 2023 to present. Last December, Mayim announced on Instagram that she would “no longer” host Jeopardy! after a lengthy hiatus, having stood with the writer’s strike, and Ken was named sole host.

Ken now helms all editions of Jeopardy! including Celebrity Jeopardy!, the nightly show, and other primetime specials like Masters.

Mattea and Matt did not qualify to move forward in the tournament, taking fifth and sixth place, respectively.

James sat in third place behind Yogesh, and Victoria in second and first.

In the first few rounds of the show, hosted by Ken Jennings , there were two games with different combinations of contestants.

Fans speculated that James thought the games would be easy as the announcer revealed that James’ occupation was “the self-described Final Boss of Jeopardy!”

After spending most of the tournament in third place, viewers noticed James looking disappointed.

Some social media users noted that he was likely feeling extra frustrated because of his link to Victoria .

“I’m a James fan, but he’s struggling against Victoria,” one fan wrote on Facebook.

“He’s clearly been frustrated.”

“Since he’s known her outside Jeopardy, it probably gets to him a different way,” suggested a second viewer, pointing out that they are both Chasers on ABC’s The Chase.

On the show, contestants try to win money by defeating a trivia expert, known as the Chaser.

James and Victoria have both been Chasers on the show.

ALL GOOD, GROCE?

Also in May, Victoria revealed a major injury she suffered.

She shared with followers on social media that she sprained her knee before Jeopardy Masters.

During an episode of the show, she responded to a clue as “Medical Collateral Ligament,” or the outside part of the knee.

She laughed as she said, “I just sprained mine!”

Victoria wrote on X after the game that she wasn’t kidding.

“FWIW, I was absolutely serious about the MCL thing,” she wrote.

“I fell off a climbing wall last fall and landed on one foot. Not one of the better things you can do to your knee! #JeopardyMasters.”

Fans in the comments wished her well in her recovery.

“Sorry to hear that, Victoria. Must be painful,” one fan posted.

“You are a Jeopardy monster lmao I cannot WAIT to see you and James battle it out on Wednesday,” commented a second.

“You’re killing it, Victoria. At this point IBM Watson is scared of you,” a third wrote jokingly.

“You are doing a fabulous job! Rooting for you to win it all,” posted a fourth.
