Now that Season 40 of Jeopardy! is over, many fans of the game show have been discussing their opinion on it online.

Countless Jeopardy! lovers watched each episode from this year’s run, which began in September and wrapped on Friday, along with shows from past seasons. Although some contestants became champions and fan favorites such as Survivor 45 alum Drew Basile and Isaac Hirsch, there were Jeopardy! viewers who were still unimpressed with the 2023-2024 competition.

Several recently took to a forum on Reddit to rant about why they found Season 40 to be the “worst” in comparison to throwback seasons.

“This had to be the worst season of Jeopardy I've ever seen,” one Reddit user wrote on the platform. “The constant, unending tournaments, played for very small stakes -- basically for a chance to be one of the first contestants to be eliminated during the next tournament.”

The commenter also complained about the “same people playing, over and over,” which wouldn’t have been a problem “if the show made any attempt to tie into its history and show clips or flashes of previous runs.”

Additionally, the commenter raged about the format of the show.

“These people came off as strangers stuck in a non-ending, convoluted tournament format, which seemed all about filling time and delaying and ignoring pay offs,” the person further wrote. “While the return to the regular format has been great, my enthusiasm for Jeopardy has definitely diminished. It will take awhile to erase the memories of the first 2/3rds of this season. I'm also dreading the return of anything tournament related in the coming season.”

Toward the end of their statement, they concluded: “It's really all on the production team. They've done a poor job this season. So many of their decisions give the impression of not having been carefully thought out. I guess the main reason this season turned out this way was the strike. They should have just aired reruns.”

Others in the Reddit thread also agreed that the “constant tournaments” were problematic for them.

“Yeah, constant tournaments with recycled players were horrible,” another Reddit user wrote. “And then when they came back to normal shows, they kept having games with questionable nit-picky judges' decisions, including the one notorious show which had a swing of multiple thousands of dollars.”

Despite some who criticized Season 40 of Jeopardy!, there were a few who admitted that they enjoyed watching the season.

“Not at all. Jeopardy is Jeopardy no matter who is playing. I still enjoyed it,” one person asserted.

There were even some Jeopardy! fans who saw both points, agreeing that some of what happened in Season 40 was unlikeable, albeit it wasn’t enough to qualify it as the “worst” season.

“I’m not going to lie, I’ve watched less Jeopardy this season than I’ve watched in years, and it was because of the tournaments,” a fan explained. “I watched early on but I did get tired of the tournaments eventually, and unfortunately my evening habit of watching Jeopardy did go away (though it didn’t help I was travelling outside North America in the spring as well). I understand why it was done and I’m looking forward to Season 41.”

They continued: “I wouldn’t go as far as calling it the worst season ever, though, and I don’t blame the production staff. They were dealing with circumstances outside their control and I’m glad it wasn’t reruns.”
