The chapter starts with Martha reuniting with her parents, who had been glad to have her back. After recovering, she immediately looks for Henry at the school, but he isn’t there. While walking on the road, she bumps into him, and they have an emotional reunion. However, Lucia, whom Henry introduces as his wife, interrupts their meetup.
The news breaks Martha’s heart. Even Becky feels sad hearing the story and asks her why she didn’t attempt to win him back. However, Martha explains that Lucia is a good person, allowing her to return to ballet. Becky blames the war for everything, calling it a stupid thing.
However, Martha explains that war is complicated, and even those participating struggle to understand it. Becky questions Martha about the mystery man in her life, but she refuses to talk. The chapter ends with Martha and Henry visiting a grave with flowers as they make plans for tea.
