Sadly, water-related deaths are growing in RI

    By Will Richmond, Providence Journal,

Good morning, I'm Will Richmond at The Providence Journal and this is the Daily Briefing.

As a child, I took years of swimming lessons.

In pools, ponds and other settings I worked on my skills as a swimmer. This was important as growing up on the water I'd be spending plenty of time in the water.

It's a skill I've ensured my children pick up, starting them in lessons at an early age.

No matter how prepared you are, the water can ultimately win and sadly that has been the case too many times this summer in Rhode Island.

Already, there have been nine water-related deaths in Rhode Island since the start of spring.

The Journal's Mark Reynolds looks at the deaths and how the effort to reduce drownings at one troublesome spot in Rhode Island appears to be working.

    • Patients in South County Health's hematology oncology department are seeking new care following resignations. The Journal's Jonny Williams has details on what caused them.

    • Lisa Pina-Warren is bringing her knowledge of Providence's South Side to her new role within the Nonviolence Institute.

The Journal's Katie Mulvaney has more on how Pina-Warren's personal experiences will help her lead.

    • During the past couple of weeks, Journal sportswriter Eric Rueb has been sharing some of his favorite golf courses to play in Rhode Island. Today, he takes a look at the places he hasn't visited yet that make up his bucket list.

    • If you're watching the Olympics today will give you a chance to see someone with Rhode Island ties. Here's how.

    RHODY RANKS

Every day we receive emails ranking Rhode Island. While the work behind the ranks may be dubious, they can be fun. Each day I'll share where Rhody Ranks from one of the latest emails.

Digital marketing experts at Skyline Social considered 86 celebrity brand endorsements to find which states are searching for them the most, looking at the combined number of searches for the following search term variations: [celebrity + brand], [celebrity + brand] endorsement, [celebrity + brand] ad, [celebrity + brand] commercial and [celebrity + brand] advertising.

According to the findings, Rhode Island is the most influenced by celebrity endorsements. The state averaged 77.71 searches per 100,000 residents each month, which is 67% higher than the national average of 46.48 searches per 100,000 people.
