5 most expensive homes sold in Central Jersey so far in 2024

Central Jersey home buyers continue to battle a hyper-competitive real estate market coupled with high interest rates, but that hasn't stopped the ultra-wealthy from finding their dream homes.

During this spring and summer, typically the busiest times for buyers and sellers, some of the priciest home sales of 2024 were recorded.

Here are a few in Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Union counties that sold for the most jaw-dropping prices of the year so far.

A $5.5 million Georgian Colonial estate in Summit

Built in 1950, the price of this seven-bedroom, 7½ bathroom home at 175 Springfield Ave. keeps going up.

It sold for $5.5 million in April, about a year after it sold for $5.375 million following a renovation. And that was about $500,000 more than it was listed for a year before that. It made our most expensive sales in Central Jersey list in 2023, too.

In the April sale, both the buyer and seller were represented by Arlene Gonnella with the Gonnella Team.

Perhaps that’s because unlike some other prestigious Central Jersey towns, Summit's hottest mansions have the best of both worlds: luxury and short walks to downtown.

The 9,500-square-foot Georgian Colonial estate sits on more than an acre. The new residents enjoy cabinetry imported from Italy, as well as an Italian marble center island in the kitchen, which opens up to a family room with 20-foot high ceilings and a gas fireplace. The primary suite has its own gas fireplace, too. The house also has a nanny's suite, playroom, pool house and pool.

A $4.8 million country compound in Tewksbury

Tewksbury is known for refined country living, which is exactly what 62 Philhower Road in the township delivered when it sold for $4.8 million in mid-July after being listed by Debra Ross with Kienlen Lattmann Sotheby's International Realty.

That was nearly a half-million dollars less than its asking price when it first hit the market in August 2023.

The country compound set upon 50 acres includes a carriage house, barn with a caretaker’s apartment, as well as a pool complex with a pool, spa, and pool house with a kitchen and bathrooms surrounded by gardens.

Completely renovated in 2020, the home has five bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a library, office and gym, as well as new millwork and hardwood floors.

A $3.9 million brick Georgian manor in Far Hills

It comes as no surprise that one of the most expensive home sales so far this year was in Far Hills, the most affluent community in Central Jersey, and one of the top 20 in the state.

In late May, the $3.9 million sale of 15 Sherwood Farm Road — a custom-designed brick Georgian Manor Home on over 7 acres — helped keep it there. It sold for about $100,000 over its asking price from when it first hit the market in November 2023 after being listed by Jo Ann Deady with Kienlen Lattmann Sotheby's International Realty.

The six-bedroom, 7½-bathroom mansion features 9- to 10-foot tray and coffer ceilings, custom millwork and cabinetry, a sweeping staircase, and plenty of rooms fit for an estate like a library, bar room, maid’s en-suite, billiards room and gym. Outside, there’s also a pool and hot tub.

A $3.5 million cozy yet contemporary home in Westfield

With a walkable downtown full of hip restaurants and chic boutiques, Westfield homeowners have a mix of a suburban lifestyle and an urban playground — making it the 34th most expensive ZIP code in the state.

At $3.5 million, the home at 785 Lenape Trail was one of the town’s priciest sales of the year when it closed in mid-July after being listed by Frank Isoldi with Coldwell Banker Realty. That was about the same as the asking price when it first hit the market in late March.

The six-bedroom, eight-bathroom estate has all the markings of an upscale abode, like high ceilings, detailed moldings and oversized windows. It also has a two-story foyer, luxury primary bathroom with a jetted tub, game room, gym and home theater.

Outside on its more than half acre lot, it has a covered and uncovered patio, built-in barbecue and firepit, and turf-fenced backyard. It’s only about 1½ miles from downtown.

A $2.2 million modern mansion in Monroe

Buyers forked over $2.195 million in February for a new Monroe home at 16 Majestic Woods Drive, eight months after it was listed for the same price by Nicole Rabbat Levine with Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty.

Behind a horseshoe driveway and stone and cedar façade are 5,500 square feet of modern living space. That includes five bedrooms (including two primary bedrooms) and 5½ bathrooms (all the bedrooms have their own en-suite bathroom).

With plenty of modern touches, the home has an open floorplan, crowd moldings, 9-foot ceilings, and a finished basement with 10-foot ceilings, ideal for a home theater or gym.
