COACHELLA VALLEY, CA — The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has issued an urgent air quality alert for the Coachella Valley, including cities such as Indio, Palm Springs, and Cathedral City. The alert, which is in effect from 9:00 PM Monday through 11:00 PM Tuesday, warns residents about elevated levels of fine particle pollution due to wildfire smoke and windblown dust.

    Health Risks and Recommendations

Exposure to these fine particles can lead to severe health issues, including aggravating lung disease, triggering asthma attacks, and increasing the risk of respiratory infections. The AQMD advises individuals, especially those with pre-existing heart or lung conditions, older adults, and children, to stay indoors with windows and doors closed. Using air conditioners or air purifiers is recommended, but whole house fans or swamp coolers that bring in outside air should be avoided.

    Protective Measures

Residents are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and to limit the use of gasoline-powered equipment. If being outdoors is unavoidable, wearing tightly-fitted N-95 or P-100 respirators can help reduce exposure to harmful particles.

    Causes and Preventive Actions

The current air quality crisis is attributed to a combination of wildfire smoke and windblown dust, with levels varying based on fire behavior and local weather conditions. To mitigate outdoor particle pollution, the AQMD suggests carpooling, telecommuting, reducing trips, and stabilizing loose soils.

For real-time updates on air quality levels, residents can visit the Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District website or download the AQMD mobile app.
