Sammy Guevara had been absent from AEW television since February after he was suspended for not following the company’s official concussion protocols during a match with Jeff Hardy. However, on what just happened to be his 31st birthday, Guevara would make an appearance during this past weekend’s Ring of Honor taping, saving Dustin Rhodes from The Dark Order.

This return would delight fans in attendance and excite both AEW and ROH fans online. Yet, following news of this being shared, a rumor spread across social media that AEW management had switched which roster Guevara was on due to his past shameful comments regarding Mercedes Moné and her not wanting to be on the same show as him. Still, this claim has now been refuted by Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live , who disclosed he was told Guevara’s move to ROH had “ absolutely nothing ” to do with the former WWE star.

“I was told that him being on Ring of Honor has absolutely nothing to do with Mercedes. I mentioned that to some people, and they were like, ‘There’s no way, it has to be.’ All I can tell you is this, ‘Sammy has been ready to go for a little while, and they did have a storyline for Sammy Guevara that would have brought him back to the main roster, but there was an aspect of the storyline that he was not cool with. I think it involved him turning heel, and he didn’t want to turn heel.”

For those unaware, Guevara’s AEW career was nearly ruined in 2020 when a four-year-old podcast interview resurfaced where he shockingly said he wanted to “r*pe” Moné, who at the time was working for WWE under the name Sasha Banks. Obviously, this disgraceful comment needed addressing, and while he publicly apologized and made amends in private with Moné, he was also suspended by AEW, instructed to attend sensitivity training, and his pay went to the Women’s Center of Jacksonville .
