Progressive group MoveOn is endorsing five Democrats in battleground House races around California, the organization exclusively shared with The Sacramento Bee.

The races – including two seats up for grabs in the Central Valley and three in Southern California – could help determine control of the House.

The slate of California endorsements announced today include:

    • Adam Gray , who is in a rematch with GOP incumbent Rep. John Duarte in CA-13

    • Rudy Salas , also in a rematch with Republican Rep. David Valadao in CA-22

    • Will Rollins , who for a second time is challenging longtime Rep. Ken Calvert in CA-41

    • Derek Tran , running against GOP Rep. Michelle Steele in CA-45

    • Dave Min, who is trying to fend off Republican Scott Baugh and keep Rep. Katie Porter ’s open CA-47 seat blue

President Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in four of the five districts — the exception was CA-41 — in 2020.

“Our members endorsed these candidates because they will prioritize a people-first agenda for Californians that will empower our communities while ensuring our rights and freedoms do not collapse at the hands of the MAGA-run Republican Party,” said MoveOn Political Action spokesperson Britt Jacovich . “MoveOn members know how critical it is to vote to keep control of the U.S. House away from MAGA extremists who intend to take our country backward through their Project 2025 agenda.”

The districts are part of MoveOn’s $32 million effort to win the presidency and other federal races for Democrats. The left-wing group plans to strategically target young voters in battleground states and House races to vote in the November election.

Republicans have been aggressively campaigning, and earlier this month criticized several Democratic contenders f or their records on crime.

Democrats need a net gain of four House seats in November to win control of the chamber. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report says that the Duarte, Valadao and Calvert seats are tossups, while the Steel race leans Republican. It says Porter’s seat leans Democratic.

    QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Failed policies of the past didn’t reduce or address homelessness. We cannot arrest our way out of poverty and homelessness. Wealth inequality and chronic homelessness is a policy failure — as the wealthiest state in the world, California has the moral obligation to offer shelter or housing before sweeping our neighbors away.”

    - Jane Kim, California director of the Working Families Party, in a statement responding to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order to state officials to begin clearing homeless campsites .
