Anthony Edwards shows support to U.S. Olympic table tennis team after brief encounter

Anthony Edwards was seemingly checking out his competition as he cheered on America’s table tennis team at the Olympics after offering them a challenge.

The Team USA basketball ace has been enjoying his time in Paris and headed out on his downtime to support America’s tennis table stars. Edwards was spotted jumping out of his seat and applauding Lily Zhang as she Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi 4-2 in round three on Monday.

Edwards’ appearance comes after he offered the tennis table stars to a game, claiming he could take a point off the Olympians. Team-mate Stephen Curry attempted to set up a game between Edwards and the American table tennis team. "They said they could smack you 21 nothing," the Golden State Warrior icon said in a video that was posted to social media by Team USA.

"I got some people here that say they gonna beat me in ping-pong, 21-0," Edwards said. "I don't believe it, I don't believe it. I'm not having it. I'm not having it. Eleven to zero, I'm scoring one point. Okay. How? When are we going to do that? Whenever,” Edwards told the team as he threw down the challenge.

Edwards’ Olympic spirit has also seen him rave about his swimming ability, claiming he’s the best swimmer in the U.S. basketball team. “On the team? They ain’t no swimmers,” the Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard replied when asked about his chances in the pool. “You got Joel big Embiid, you’ve got AD (Anthony Davis) and Bam (Adebayo). They ain’t swimming fast.

“LeBron (James), he ain’t swimming fast. KD (Kevin Durant), Kawhi (Leonard), (Jason) Tatum, they’re not swimming fast at all. So my only challengers are Book (Devon Booker) when he might not know how to swim. Jrue (Holiday), he might drown, and (Tyrese) Haliburton, oh my god, if Haliburton beat me then I just need to never touch the water again!”

Team USA will be hoping that Edwards’ focus remains on winning gold alongside his team-mates, and they got off to the ideal start with a 110-84 win over Serbia to begin their Olympic campaign. Edwards scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds with him expected to continue to play a major role in the team moving forward.

The 22-year-old came off the bench after just two minutes as Embiid was hooked following a slow start with the defending champions trailing 10-2 at that point before Edwards entered the court and changed proceedings.

Durant made his long-awaited Team USA bow off the bench after missing training camp and the London exhibition games due to a calf injury. The 35-year-old drove the team to victory by scoring 23 points, hitting nine out of 10 shots, six rebounds and three assists in just 22 minutes of play.
