( WDTN ) — The 2024 Summer Games are the first Ohioans can legally bet on hundreds of Olympic events.

Before wagering on some of the biggest betting opportunities, experts say doing your homework ahead of placing bets is important.

There are 32 sports and 392 events in the 2024 Olympic Games. Which games can be bet on depends on the state you’re in.

“Jurisdictions regulate you know, gaming in very bespoke ways. And by and large in this country, states have the authority to regulate,” said Joe Maloney, senior VP for Strategic Communications.

In Ohio, you can bet on 29 sports, from popular games like basketball to lesser-known sports like handball. And, there’s not much difference in how you do so.

“Obviously, there will be favorites and underdogs even in the individual competitions. Those particularly, those that will have a judge involved, such as gymnastics. So you’ll see things like betting favorites and the odds will reflect who the favorites are to win those competitions and who the long-shot underdogs are,” said Maloney.

Experts say the 2024 Paris Games have a better atmosphere compared to the 2020 Tokyo Games and for two big reasons: time difference and streaming.

“That experience will now be fully enabled with the 2024 Paris Olympics, all of which will have a big effect on the overall size of the betting volume in this country and in states like Ohio,” said Maloney.

If you do bet, experts say to have a game plan ready to go. Always bet in a legal marketplace, keep it social and stick to a budget. But most importantly, know the terms.

“Understand what a plus line is or a minus line, understand, you know, a little bit of the jargon when it comes to what you’re betting on, because, again, that will ensure you have a full awareness of what you are spending money on,” said Maloney.

If you have concerns that you or a loved one is developing a gambling addiction – you can call 1-800-Gambler or visit the American Gaming Association for more resources.
