Salt Lake residents aged 65 or older saw the biggest population jump of any age group in the metro area from 2020 to 2023, according to recent census data.

The big picture: The 65-and-up population grew in all of America's biggest cities from 2020 to 2023 — by close to 20% in some cases, according to the Census Bureau's latest population estimates.

Zoom in: Utah is the youngest state in the nation , with a median age of 31.9 years.

By the numbers: Children 14 years or younger dipped by 8% during that time, while the 15 to 24 and 40 to 64 age groups saw increases of about 5% and 3%, respectively.
