After dropping just one match in the group round and winning a quarterfinal against Great Britain, the US Women’s Rugby Sevens team is semifinals-bound for the first time since the sport was introduced in the Olympics in 2016.
Though rugby is a less-popular sport in the US, the team has gained notoriety this year in part due to team member Ilona Maher, who went viral on Tiktok during the 2020 Olympics and has continued to grow a social media audience since.

The Olympic rugby tournament began with a group stage, before moving onto quarterfinals that wrapped up yesterday. Two games remain for Team USA: the semifinals, then the third-place game or the gold-medal game.

Despite the the result of the semifinal, Team USA will play one more game today for a medal:
- If they lose against New Zealand: Bronze medal game vs. Australia, 1:00 p.m. ET (E!, Peacock)
