Joey Veerman transfer stance emerges amid Liverpool links to PSV midfielder

Liverpool is reportedly interested in signing PSV Eindhoven midfielder Joey Veerman this summer as Arne Slot aims to bring in the first player of his managerial tenure.

The Reds have made it no secret that they are on the lookout for a new holding midfielder in the current transfer window, having failed to sign the likes of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia 12 months ago and instead bringing in Wataru Endo .

The Japanese international held his own in the no.6 role but has since been linked with a move away from Anfield just a year into his deal, with Liverpool recently rejecting an underwhelming bid from French club Marseille .

Now, however, the Reds are being linked with Netherlands international Veerman, who featured in all of his nation's games at Euro 2024 as they reached the semi-finals. The 25-year-old also helped PSV win the Eredivisie title last season, finishing seven points clear of Slot's former side Feyenoord.

But according to Dutch daily the Eindhovens Dagblad, the interest is "just a rumor" for now, and Liverpool has done nothing about it yet. Journalist Rik Elfrink took to social media to confirm that there has been no contact between the two clubs over any potential deal.

Veerman would certainly be a good addition to Liverpool's midfield, however, having come off the back of a title-winning season with PSV and started all six of the Netherlands' fixtures at Euro 2024 this summer. He has also won two KNVB Cups and two Johan Cruyff Shield's with the Dutch giants.

After starting his career out with second division side FC Volendam, Veerman made 81 appearances for the club, scoring and assisting 12 times each, before transferring to Heerenveen at the start of the 2019-20 campaign on a three-year-deal.

He became a mainstay in the side during his two-and-a-half seasons at the Abe Lenstra Stadion, racking up yet another 81 appearances before moving onto PSV in January 2022. During his time at Heerenveen, Veerman scored 18 goals and provided 23 assists.

And since signing a four-and-a-half-year deal with Peter Bosz's outfit more than two years ago, the midfielder has been integral to their recent domestic success, picking up five trophies in the last two seasons. Veerman has so far recorded 22 goals and 40 assists in 115 appearances across all competitions for PSV.

One of those strikes came against Arsenal in a 2-0 victory in a Europa League group stage fixture in October 2022, securing a place in the knockout rounds for the Dutch side at the Philips Stadion. Last season, Veerman created the most chances in the Eredivisie (130) as PSV were crowned champions.
