Trump rally shooting: A member of local law enforcement saw the gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, more than 90 minutes before the shooting started, according to text messages from a local countersniper who was part of the broader security detail. “I did see him with a range finder looking towards stage. FYI. If you wanna notify SS snipers to look out. I lost sight of him,” one of the texts said. Full report >
Secret Service hearing: The messages and other information could come up during a Senate hearing Tuesday where the acting director of the Secret Service, Ronald Rowe, and deputy director of the FBI, Paul Abbate, are expected to testify. Rowe recently replaced former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, who resigned in the face of bipartisan criticism of the way the Secret Service handled the assassination attempt. Trump interview: Trump has agreed to be interviewed by the FBI as part of an investigation into the assassination attempt. The expected interview with the 2024 Republican presidential nominee is part of the FBI’s standard protocol to speak with victims during the course of their criminal investigations, the Associated Press reported. New border wall: One border town is taking a new approach to try and stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents working in the El Centro Sector in Southern California have built a second border wall to reinforce the original wall in an attempt to halt cartel proceedings. The secondary fence was created out of materials owned by the federal government that were not being used. 2024 election: Polls have started to trickle out that offer clues to what a contest between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump would look like. Scott Tranter, the director of data science for Decision Desk HQ, said he could make an argument that either Trump or Harris is in the preferable position in the race, which he says underscores how tight the race is. UK attack: Police continue to investigate an attack on children at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in northwest England that left three children dead and 11 people hurt. Weight loss drug warning: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning that people are overdosing on compounded semaglutide injectable products, which include the weight loss drugs Wegovy and Ozempic, among others. The agency says compounded drugs pose higher risks than the FDA-approved versions, and should only be used for patients “whose medical needs cannot be met by an available FDA-approved drug.” What to know >
Colon cancer screening: The FDA approved a blood test to detect colon cancer. The non-invasive screening test detects alterations in the blood associated with colorectal cancer. It’s intended as a screening test for people at average risk for the disease, not those at high risk. Details >
Breast cancer study: Getting a double mastectomy did not increase the likelihood a woman with cancer in one breast would survive compared to those who got a lumpectomy or a mastectomy, a study published last Thursday in JAMA Oncology found. ‘Zombie deer’ disease: A neurological infection rapidly spreading in deer causing “zombielike” symptoms could potentially be a risk to humans. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a deadly neurological illness that is only known to affect deer, elk, moose, reindeer and muntjac and is spread by misfolded natural proteins called prions.
