Coco Gauff couldn't hold back her emotions at the Olympics , as her match against Donna Vekic took a contentious turn when an argument with the umpire and supervisor took center stage over her loss.

The No. 2 ranked player in the world initially lost a tiebreak set to Vekic and subsequently found herself on shaky ground following a disputed incident. Down 2-3 in the second set with Vekic poised for a break, a call that Vekic's shot was out was quickly reversed mid-play. Gauff failed to return the ball and the point went to the No. 21 ranked player.

Gauff protested that the premature call disrupted her play and she confronted the chair umpire. The umpire stood his ground, saying, "For me, the call didn't affect your shot," However, Gauff heatedly insisted: "He called it out before I hit it. That's why I went up on the ball."

Gauff vehemently continued the debate and soon, the court supervisor was summoned. During the dispute, commentator Miles Maclagan commented, "I think the umpire has made the correct call. I have sympathy for both because it happened so quickly and you're not necessarily looking for it either".

When supervisor Clare Wood joined the fray, Gauff focused her frustrations on her: "You have to understand, he called it out before I hit it. What's the rule? It's not even a millisecond, he called it when I hit the ball. I understand if it was the same time but it was before. It's not even a perception.

"I always have to advocate for myself. It happened to me in July, it happened to me here. This isn't fair. This isn't fair. I feel like I'm getting cheated on constantly in this game. I constantly feel like that and then I have to argue. No because I do and then you guys apologise after."

As Gauff aired out her grievances, Naomi Cavaday, the co-commentator, added: "Clare Wood just telling her to be careful here with the language she's using. Vekic is waiting. We don't have video review for the players to use for this. It is a judgement call.

"If Gauff had hit the ball into the court it would be a replay but because she missed the shot, the point has been awarded to her opponent because the call was wrong.

"Gauff's argument is that it impacted her shot and the call made her miss. When it happens on the baseline there is such little time between the bounce and your swing that the most likely situation is that the call has not impacted your swing because it's such a reaction, it's so quick, there's no time for it."

The tension escalated with boos spreading through Court Philippe-Chatrier as play continued, and stretching beyond the court, Vekic could be heard assuring the audience: "It's not my fault".

Following the fiery exchange, Gauff couldn't secure another game, resulting in Vekic's unexpected triumph, sealing the match at 7-6(7) 6-2.
