There was nothing quite like the glam metal movement of the 1980s (and 1990s, honestly). Loud music, loud hair, loud outfits, and loud audiences were the main elements of the notably visual genre, and few genres have matched its energy since before the turn of the century. Big names like Skid Row and Mötley Crüe were popular glam metal bands at the time, but there were also a few lesser-known and very underrated glam metal bands from that era that deserve some credit. Let’s look at four examples!

Orange 9mm are back — and they are glistening. The post-hardcore/rap-metal heroes played their first show in 25 years(!) this past Friday (July 26th), rocking the Terminal 5 rooftop as part of the New York City Tattoo Arts Convention in the band's hometown. Orange 9mm's current lineup includes OG vocalist Chaka Malik and longtime guitarist Taylor McLam, plus new additions bassist Cory Bonfiglio and, on drums, Revolver Brand Partnership Director Chris Enriquez.

Three years after releasing the instrumental “Scent of Dark”, Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has unveiled a new solo track titled “Deified”. The new instrumental piece showcases Iommi’s iconic melancholic blues soloing before transitioning into a heavier, doom-laden groove. It also features a classical choir, reminiscent of Black Sabbath’s “Supertzar” from their 1975 album Sabotage. However, “Deified” presents a darker tone, with Iommi exploring deeper emotional depths through his guitar solos.

In the late 1980s Ruston found itself as the birthplace of the Elephant 6 Recording Company, a musical coalition that would go on to spawn famous bands like The Apples in Stereo, Of Montreal, The Olivia Tremor Control, and most notably Neutral Milk Hotel. Julian Koster was a member of the aforementioned Neutral Milk Hotel, joining the band in the late 90s for the recording of their cult classic album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Koster recorded the banjo and singing saw on the album, then transitioned to the band's touring bassist after the album's release. Earlier this week Koster came under fire after serious allegations were levied against him.
