When it comes to building engines, one philosophy is that the bigger, the better. Six cylinders? Why not eight? Ten? Twelve? Another philosophy is to work smarter, not harder. If you can get supercar specs out of six cylinders, why drag the car down with all that extra aluminum and cast iron? Track records are frequently made and broken on a difference of 100 pounds of curb weight, and with how much juice you can get out of turbochargers and electric motors these days, it's no wonder some of the quickest cars in the world have some of the leanest engines.

The pickup truck is synonymous with blue-collar Americans as a vehicle doing double duty as both a mode of transport and a means of carrying out hard work. The latter is a trait that would seem to perfectly line up with the concept of a manual gearbox, as both the pickup truck and the stick shift are signs that the operator is not afraid to put in the effort. The manual gearbox is simple, robust, and hard-working, as are America's pickups. So why, then, have their numbers dwindled?

A couple of months ago, Ferrari patented an upside-down hydrogen engine with gear-driven superchargers, and now the automaker has explained how the concept would work with turbochargers instead. The new technology was discovered by CarBuzz at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Unlike the abovementioned patent, Ferrari makes no mention of hydrogen power this time, but it's worth noting that the reason Ferrari is working on an inverted engine design in the first place is space.

If you were hoping to get what is arguably the finest sports car on the planet, you're out of luck. While browsing the Porsche USA site this week (as one does when one can), we noticed that the 911 GT3 no longer appears. The production facility in Zuffenhausen where the GT3 is produced has a very limited manufacturing capacity, and although Porsche tries to get as many out of the door as possible, demand far exceeds supply, and not just for the GT3; other high-performance Porsches must also be made.

Porsche production manager Albrecht Reimold tells Automobilewoche that the 718 lineup, comprised of the Boxster and Cayman, will end production in 2025. Porsche has already been forced to retire the 718 twins in Europe due to more stringent cybersecurity regulations (and the Macan along with it). More stringent emissions requirements across the pond would have done the pair in at some point as it is. The 718’s electric replacement is underway, and while Reimold didn’t share further details on the upcoming models, it’s hard to imagine Porsche will leave much of a gap between the end of 718 production and the next model’s introduction.
