    Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile Virus

    Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott announced Tuesday that 40 mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus.

    Of the samples, 37 Culex pipiens-restuans and two Culiseta melanura were collected on July 16 and July 17 from Cold Spring Harbor (1), Northport (3), Melville (6), Greenlawn (1), Dix Hills (3), West Babylon (1), Lindenhurst (1), West Islip (1), Setauket (3), Port Jefferson Station (2), Mount Sinai (1), Smithtown (1), Commack (1), Nesconset (1), Bay Shore (1) Holbrook (1), Brentwood (2), Islip (1), Farmingville (1), Holtsville (2), North Patchogue (1), Aquebogue (2), and Manorville (2). One Coquillettidia perturbans, collected on July 10 from Manorville, (1) also tested positive for West Nile virus.

    The West Nile virus is carried primarily by mosquitoes, and can cause a variety of results, from no symptoms to serious illness or even death. Most vulnerable are older people or those with compromised medical systems.
