James Watkins, the director behind the 2012 Daniel Radcliffe-led The Woman in Black and television series McMafia and The Ipcress File , has a new film hitting theaters this September.

Watkins adapts Christian Tafdrup's 2022 film Speak No Evil into an English-language remake led by James McAvoy, who is joined by co-stars Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough, Kris Hitchen, and Motaz Malhees.

The original starred Morten Burian, Sidsel Siem Koch, Fedja van Huêt, Karina Smulders and Liva Forsberg and followed a family who visit friends they met while on holiday. The idyllic weekend getaway takes an unpleasant turn, and things begin to unfold unexpectedly.

Watkins' adaptation will follow the same plot.

The film received its first audience last night, and early reactions argue that it might be "the best horror film of the year" – a bold statement to make a mere matter of weeks after Longlegs hit theaters.

Tessa Smith of Mama's Geeky says the film is "a wild ride" and that "James McAvoy is brilliant & terrifying", and Discussing Film's Ernesto Valenzuela says it "is a cleverly crafted thriller that reaches levels of discomfort and tension that very few other films have this year."

Other reactions followed suit, with people noting the comedy as a highlight.

@SLTAngst on X (formerly known as Twitter) says, "It kicks off as a quirky comedy and gradually turns into a gripping thriller", and actor Josh Blumenkranz says it "just might be the funniest film I've seen this year."

More reactions are available to read below.

Speak No Evil hits theaters on September 13.

The original 2022 film is available to watch on AMC+ and Philo, as well as available to users with a premium subscription on YouTube, Sling TV, The Roku Channel, Prime Video and YouTube TV.
