FANS believe Jamaican sprinter Kishane Thompson has American Noah Lyles’s number as Thompson sits atop the leaderboard heading into the men’s 100m Olympic competition.
Thompson, the No. 1 ranked sprinter in the world with a speed of 9.77 seconds for the 100-meter dash, posted a picture of himself in front of the Olympic rings on his Instagram .
Kishane Thompson posted the world’s best time for 100m at Jamaica’s Olympic trials in June AFP Team USA’s Noah Lyles claims he is the “fastest man in the world” ahead of the 100m Olympic competition, which begins on Saturday Alamy
“PARIS MISSION !!!!!” Thompson wrote in his caption.
Fans rushed to the post backing Thompson over USA’s sprinter Lyles.
“Noah’s nightmare,” wrote one fan.
“Soooo true !!” a second agreed.
“He’s gonna smoke Lyles,” claimed a third.
“Kish please win and shut up these self-proclaimed achievers,” commented a fourth.
“I don’t care what you place, as long as you cross the line before Noah,” said a fifth.
This comes after Lyle’s bold claim on Team USA’s social media account on Friday.
While standing on the large boat that took the U.S. athletes down the Seine, Lyles, 27, introduced himself .
“What’s up, Team USA? This is Noah Lyles, fastest man in the world,” Lyles said.
“And we are out here in Paris getting ready to go on our tour of the world, introducing America to the Olympics.”
Lyles caught backlash for the comment but has yet to back down from his claims that he is the fastest man.
“It’s me, It’s always going to be me,” the 27-year-old USA sprinter said.
“Everybody knows that the title goes to the Olympic champion and the world champion, which I am one of, and soon to be another one of.”
The differences between sprinters Noah Lynes and Kishane Thompson
Lyles has the right to be confident as he is the reigning world champion in both the 100m and 200m competitions.
He secured victories in both events at last year’s world championships in Budapest, Hungary .
Lyles also took home gold at the U.S. trials in June with a speedy time of 9.83 seconds.
The 27-year-old improved upon that time two weeks ago at a Diamond League event in London, posting a time of 9.81.
But in the Olympic finals this year, he will likely come face-to-face with Thompson, who posted a world’s best time of 9.77 seconds at the Jamaica trials last month.
Thompson revealed he didn’t go full speed at the trials either, meaning he could score an even lower time at the Olympics.
“The goal wasn’t to prove anything tonight, just to run a 70 or 60 and see where I am at,” Thompson said.
As long as Thompson stays healthy, the 100m showdown between him and Lyles is poised to be a nail-biter.
Thompson has missed out on competitions for years due to hamstring injuries.
Jamaica has had a stronghold on winning the gold medal in the 100m at the Olympics winning it three of the last four games.
Legendary Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt won gold for his country in 2008, 2012, and 2016 before retiring.
He still holds the world record time of 9.58 seconds for the 100-meter dash.
The men’s 100m competition is set to begin on Saturday.
