Where Are the Fierce Five Gymnasts Now? Update on the 2012 Olympic Team Members

The 2012 women’s gymnastics Olympic team went down in history as the “Fierce Five.” Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber, McKayla Maroney and Kyla Ross won Team USA the first gold medal since 1996’s “Magnificent Seven” team. Some of the teammates continued with the competitive sport, while others retired.

Aly Raisman

After the team captain helped the team win gold in 2012, she competed on Dancing With the Stars in season 16. She finished in fourth place.

Aly later returned to the Olympic stage at the 2016 Rio Olympics alongside Simone Biles. Alongside the 2016 team, Aly won gold while also earning a silver medal in the all-around competition, a silver medal on balance beam and a gold medal for her floor routine.

After retiring from the sport, Aly released her 2017 book, Fierce: How Competing for Myself Changed Everything. The gymnast was also given opportunities to appear in film, including in Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You” music video and in the reboot of Charlie’s Angels.

In addition to her media and athletic opportunities, Aly became a strong advocate against sexual assault and harassment. In 2017, she came forward as one of the survivors of Larry Nassar‘s abuse of countless gymnasts and other athletes.

Jordyn Wieber

After helping the Fierce Five win gold, Jordyn retired from elite gymnastics and worked as a team manager for the UCLA gymnastics team for three years. She also served as a volunteer coach for the team while studying psychology. In 2019, Jordyn became a coach for the University of Arkansas’ Razorbacks team.

Alongside several former teammates, Jordyn came forward in 2018 as one of the survivors of Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse.

As for her personal life, Jordyn married fellow Olympian Chris Brooks in 2023.

Gabby Douglas

After making a name for herself at the 2012 Olympics, Gabby became the first African American Olympic individual all-around champion. Two years later, she detailed her athletic journey in the biopic The Gabby Douglas Story. Not only that, but the gymnast created her reality TV series, Douglas Family Gold.

In 2016, Gabby made her Olympic return by competing in Rio. Although she had to withdraw from the 2024 Paris Olympic team, Gabby is training for the 2028 summer Olympics. She is the only member of the Fierce Five who has not retired from elite gymnastics.

McKayla Maroney

Known as the face for the hilarious “not impressed” meme, McKayla won silver for the vault finals at the 2012 Olympics. She eventually retired from the sport. In 2017, McKayla revealed that she was one of the survivors from Larry’s sexual abuse.

Apart from gymnastics, McKayla ventured into releasing her own music. In 2020, she released her first single, “Wake Up Call,” followed by “Covid Lockdown.”

Kyla Ross

After helping the 2012 Olympic team win, Kyla stepped down from elite gymnastics to focus on NCAA gymnastics at UCLA. Her final collegiate competition was in 2020.

Eventually, Kyla joined the UCLA coaching staff while still studying molecular, cell, and developmental biology. From 2021 through 2022, she joined Jordyn in coaching the University of Arkansas’ team.
