Oregon State gymnast Jade Carey wins Olympic gold in U.S. team victory

The U.S. women’s gymnastics team is once again the best in the world after taking home the gold Tuesday, July 30 in the team competition at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.

Simone Biles of course led the way, but Oregon State gymnast Jade Carey did her part when her number was called to start the team final.

The first event for the Americans was the vault, Carey’s specialty and her only event of the day she was competing in for the U.S.

After Vancouver, Washington local Jordan Chiles went first with a 14.400 score, Carey was second and rocked her routine with a score of 14.800.

Biles went last and attempted the same vault as Carey, edging out the OSU Beaver with a 14.900 score to put the U.S. in first at 44.100 after one rotation, a lead the squad never relinquished.

It’s been a tough Olympics for Carey so far who missed on qualifying for the individual floor finals, an event she took gold in at the 2020 Tokyo Games. She did qualify for the vault final with a third place finish in the preliminaries.

Still, Carey will be leaving Paris with some gold as the U.S. team dominated the uneven bars, balance beam and floor routine to finish with 171.296 points in first place. Italy took second with 165.494 points and Brazil took bronze with 164.497 points.

It's the third gold medal for the U.S. women in the last four Olympics and comes after taking silver three years ago in 2021 at the 2020 Tokyo Games. It's Team USA's fourth gold medal in the women's team competition all time.

The women’s vault final will be at 7:20 a.m. on Aug. 3.
