An Aiken County Sheriff's Office incident report and new information from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division revealed more details about the officer-involved shooting Thursday, July 25 near JD Lever Elementary School.

Aiken County deputies responded to the intersection of Columbia Highway North and Beaver Dam Road just after 2 p.m. Thursday for a shirtless man running on school grounds, according to the incident report.

One responding deputy, who was not involved in the shooting, pointed his car toward the man and the man "dropped to the ground," according to the report. The deputy got out of his patrol car while telling the man to put his hands behind his back.

The man allegedly "refused to comply," and then the incident report skips to deputies handcuffing and shackling the man, according to the report.

A news release from SLED notes that in between the initial encounter and the man's arrest, there was a physical altercation and two deputies deployed Taser stun guns.

The stun guns "were not effective" and as the altercation continued, both deputies fired their handguns at the man, according to the release.

Aiken County sheriff's Capt. Eric Abdullah previously told The Chronicle the man knocked down one of the male deputies and then charged at him before shots were fired by both deputies.

One of the deputies accompanied the man in the ambulance to the emergency room and assisted paramedics with chest compressions, according to the report.

The man remains hospitalized as of Monday, according to the SLED. Neither of the deputies involved in the shooting were shot, but one was treated for injuries at the hospital.

According to the incident report, a total of 32 deputies responded to the call, including Abdullah and Sheriff Michael Hunt.

"This is an ongoing investigation. As such, no other information about the case will be disclosed by SLED at this time," according to a news release. "SLED agents will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses in this matter. Further, SLED will collect all relevant evidence and will forensically test such evidence as needed. Information gathered in the SLED investigation of the incident will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors."
