Context:
While the video did not appear to feature altered visuals, it did not show Harris. The identity of the dancer is unknown.
Social media posts in the summer of 2024 were sharing a video they say shows U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris dancing on an episode of "Soul Train," the musical variety TV show that aired 1971 to 2006.
For example, on July 22, 2024, a TikTok user posted the video displaying the onscreen caption, "A young Kamala Harris dancing on 'Soul Train.'" The user posted the video just one day after President Joe Biden dropped his reelection bid and endorsed Harris as the Democratic Party's 2024 presidential nominee.
In another TikTok post with the video shared months earlier, on April 21, 2024, an onscreen caption read, "VP Kamala Harris on 'Soul Train' pop lockin'!" An onscreen comment added, "Yessss she was on 'Soul Train' like way back tooooooooo popping and locking."
We also located other past references to the video allegedly showing Harris.
However, the truth was, the video — which did not appear to feature altered visuals — did not show Harris on "Soul Train." If it did, journalists from reputable news outlets would have documented the event, or biographies about the vice president would have mentioned it. That had not happened. Furthermore, the person dancing did not resemble Harris, as numerous commentators noted.
For example, the most-liked comment with over 2,000 likes under one TikTok video read, "Y'all that's not her."

It was unknown when "Soul Train" aired the in-question footage and who it showed. The identity of the dancer was unknown. That said, all of our research indicated the original soundtrack for the clip featured Mariah Carey's 2005 song , "It's Like That." If that is indeed the case, the episode aired between 2005 and the final episode in 2006.
From 2004 through 2010, Harris served as San Francisco's first female district attorney. Considering that high-profile status, if Harris had danced on "Soul Train" in 2005 or 2006, newspapers, local TV news and blogs would have reported the appearance. We located no such reports.
