MADISON COUNTY, Ind. — The National Weather Service (NWS) Indianapolis confirmed an EF2 tornado touched down near Perkinsville in Madison County just before 10 p.m. on Monday.

The tornado was on the ground for three miles leaving behind considerable damage to the Frankton Lapel Community Schools Administration building , the Perkinsville Cemetery and at least two homes nearby. This includes the home of Carmella King who has lived here for more than 40 years.

“I woke up and I couldn’t even look out my window,” King said. “I thought, ‘Well it’s not fog’ and so then I went to my door and I couldn’t go out my door because there was a tree on top of my roof.”

When King stepped outside, she was surprised to see many of her giant trees toppled over, debris everywhere, and her porch swing on the complete other side of her backyard. But thankfully, her community is already stepping in to help her clean up.

“I just posted on Facebook and then cars started pulling in and more cars started pulling in and then a tractor pulled in,” she said. “It’s like God supplied all of the needs.”

And this is not the first time King’s home has seen this kind of damage.

“In 2017, a tree fell [on the roof] right after my husband died,” she said. “I lost my rafters and roof then, so I thought, ‘Deja vu, here we go again.’”

Despite everything, King still maintains a positive attitude.

“I have friends and family that have come to help me, it’s just unreal,” she said. “God has supplied. I guess God wanted me to trim my trees and so I did haha.”

In the end, King is just thankful that nobody was hurt.

“It could’ve been worse,” King said. “I have electricity. I have family and friends that love me and that’s all that matters.”

Clean up will continue at King’s home and the other places hit hardest by Monday night’s tornado over the next several days. To learn more about the damage, click here.
