For one of the most popular sports in the Olympics, there's a learning curve that goes with gymnastics for the common viewer. That's why stellar announcers must step in to bridge the gap and explain what the heck that triple-flip double-twist is.

This year's NBC Olympic gymnastics broadcast crew is loaded with talent, both athletic and journalistic. They have been covering everything there is to know as far as this year's men's and women's competitions go, even if it means coming up with accurate words to describe what Simone Biles can do in the air.

Who is calling Olympic gymnastics for NBC?

Five former Olympic gymnasts are part of the experienced broadcast crew featured by NBC for the events, including Hernandez (2016 Rio), Samantha Peszek (2008 Beijing), Tim Dagget (1984 Los Angeles), Justin Spring (2008 Beijing), and Roethlisberger (1992 Barcelona, 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney).

Who is Laurie Hernandez? Meet gold medal winner-turned-analyst

Hernandez is a 24-year-old retired professional gymnast, most known for competing with Team USA in the 2016 Summer Olympics. There, she participated in the gold medal-winning team event and took home a silver in the individual balance beam final.

After the Olympics, Hernandez appeared on "Dancing with the Stars" and won the entire competition. She took two years off from the sport until 2018 when she returned to training with her sights set on the 2020 Tokyo Games. However, in the postponed qualifying cycle in 2021, Hernandez suffered several injuries that resulted in her eventually failing to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Since her retirement that same year, Hernandez has authored two books and begun her career as a television host. She even traveled to Tokyo to help out with NBC's gymnastics coverage in 2021 when she didn't make the Tokyo team.
