Olympics Day 5 briefing: U.S. women win rugby bronze in walk-off fashion, gymnastics dominate for team gold

The Olympic action continued Tuesday with no lack of drama. Here's the latest from Day 5 of the Games.

American tennis star Coco Gauff lost her third-round singles match Tuesday, but it was an argument with the chair umpire over a missed call late in the second set that drew focus. Gauff complained the episode was "unfair" and affected her defeat, despite already being down by a considerable amount to Croatia's Donna Vekic by that point.

Organizers have been forced to postpone the men's triathlon and all surfing events Tuesday. Continued high levels of bacteria in the Seine River forced the postponement, but organizers are confident the races will still happen this week. The men's triathlon will now start Wednesday after the women's race. Bad weather in Tahiti forced surfers to remain beached Tuesday.

The International Judo Federation will investigate why Algeria's Messaoud Redouane Dris failed his weigh-in against Israel's Tohar Butbul. It is the third time in two Olympics a Muslim judoka has seemingly refused to fight Butbul — presumably in protest over Israel's military actions in Palestine.

With just four days remaining in the Olympic swimming program, fresh doping allegations against Team China threaten the integrity of the Paris competition. And Australia appears poised to dethrone the U.S. as the top swim nation.

Three big things about Team USA

1. Women's rugby walks off Australia for first medal

The women of Team USA rugby defeated Australia 14-12 to clinch the bronze medal Tuesday. It's the first medal for any U.S. rugby team at an Olympics since 1924 and the first-ever for the women. It took a dramatic last-minute score and two-point conversion for the U.S. to win the game after Australia failed to convert on its final try.

2. Women's gymnastics wins team all-around gold

Simone Biles and company dominated the women's team all-around competition to win gold for Team USA. It's the first time since 2016 that the U.S. finished on top of the podium in the team competition. The gold for Biles makes her the most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast ever with eight medals total.

3. Men's soccer reaches quarterfinals for first time in 24 years

After defeating Guinea 3-0 in its final group stage match Tuesday, Team USA will next face Morocco in the quarterfinals on Friday. It's the first time the U.S. will play in an Olympic knockout match since the 2000 Games in Sydney, Australia. 21-year-old Kevin Paredes scored twice for the Americans against Guinea.
