WEISSPORT BOROUGH, CARBON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The historic Weissport Bridge in Carbon County has been renamed.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and local officials, along with the family of Ralph Strubinger unveiled a sign renaming it the Ralph Strubinger Memorial Bridge.

Ralph was a PennDOT worker who lost his life on duty in 1977.

Officials are working on renaming other bridges in honor of PennDOT workers who lost their lives while on the job.

“This is really important for us as PennDOT to be able to provide this for the families. This is a bridge they travel often and this is a constant reminder of their loved one and then able to hold them in memory there. It also serves an important reminder to the communities about the work zones, about being safe in the work zones, that there’s real lives,” said Sean Brown from PennDOT District Five.

“Such a happy day. It’s not sad. It’s honoring my brother and people who pass this bridge will always, he’ll never be forgotten never,” Nancy McArdle, Sister of Ralph Strubinger, stated.

In the last few years, legislation has been passed for these memorials to be placed in various locations across the commonwealth.
