CBS Evening News’s Norah O’Donnell to step away from anchor desk

CBS Evening News’s Norah O’Donnell announced she will soon leave her role as anchor and managing editor of the nightly news program.

In a memo shared with staff on Tuesday, O’Donnell said it was “time to do something different” and that she would transition to the role of a network correspondent after the 2024 election.

O’Donnell has spent the last five years as the CBS Evening News anchor. Before that, she co-hosted the network’s morning news show.

"I have spent 12 years in the anchor chair here at CBS News, connected to a daily broadcast and the rigors of a relentless news cycle. It's time to do something different. This presidential election will be my seventh as a journalist, and for many of us in this business we tend to look at our careers in terms of these milestone events," O’Donnell said .

CBS News & Stations and CBS Media Ventures CEO Wendy McMahon commended O’Donnell’s work and said her new role will enable her to “do more of the storytelling and big interviews that are a hallmark of CBS News, as well as Norah's illustrious career."
